Roskam: The Threat We Face From ISIL is Real

Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on House passage of authorization to aid vetted Syrian rebels:

"For the last six years, American foreign policy has been based on a president who sees the world as he'd like it to be instead of how the world is. The United States has communicated weakness and ambiguity to our enemies, fractured relationships with allies, and missed opportunities to be a force for good in the world. Because of arbitrary political timelines, we pulled out of Iraq and left a power vacuum that terrorists easily filled. The threat we face from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is real. The volatile Middle East we see today is what happens when the United States chooses to lead from behind. While this short-term authorization is necessary to help stop the rise of ISIL, I still have a number of concerns about the president's long-term strategy to eliminate this terrorist threat. I will continue to closely monitor the Administration's actions, and press them to carry out their objective to degrade and destroy ISIL. Allowing ISIL to establish a safe haven in the Middle East will only increase the threat, make our options worse and the decisions even harder."
